Appeal Democrat, Saturday, March 8, 1947, Pg 1 Rites Are Set For Sutter Pioneer Funerals services for Mrs Emerson Hixson of Franklin Corners, the former Leonora Rice, who celebrated her 89th birthday February 27, will be held in Ullrey Memorial chapel, Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Sutter City Cemetery. Mrs Hixson, who died March 6, was born in Yuba county, the daughter of the late Samuel rice and Rebecca Middleswart Rice. Samuel Rice came to California from Ohio by the Nicaraguan route in 1852 and established a lumber business near Brownsville later buying a "squatter's claim" to land in Sutter County. Mrs Hixson married Emerson Hixson on September 20, 1876 and leaves 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Mrs Mary Hixson Ziegler of Franklin Corners and Mrs Marjorie Hixson Bodley of Antioch. Four generations of the Hixson family has resided in the Franklin district.
