Daily Press, Hesperia Star & Desert Dispatch; 3/4/2008 Roy Baker, 89, passed away Feb. 13, 2008 at home with relatives and care-takers by his side. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an Apple Valley resident of 40 years. He was born June 6, 1918, in Wheeling, W.Va. He attended Pulaski High School in Commonwealth, Va., in 1938, where he excelled in basketball and football. He was a leading top scorer in both sports. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps before WWII and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. During the war attacks he flew 92 missions in Europe and the South Pacific. He was a member of three squadrons; the 19th, 23rd and 43rd bombardier and he rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His medals include the Silver Star, a distinguished cross, an Asian-Pacific CMP and an American Service defense medal. He was a tail-gunner on the B-17. He also was an active member in the Pearl Harbor Survivors' Club (he was one of three remaining survivors in his chapter). After the war ended he was hired on at Pacific Bell AT&T. It was there he met his wife, Jo. Roy and Jo both retired from Pacific Bell after 37 years. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. After retiring they moved to the High Desert in which he passionately loved his Morgan horses. He also enjoyed traveling in his R.V. where he visited all 50 states. He also enjoyed fishing and was an avid gardener. He was a member of the Senior Coalition and Disabled American Veterans where he received an award for bronze leader in 1995. He also served on the Jury Panel in the Victorville Superior Court  Department II in 1991. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Jo Baker; three grandchildren, Rick Baker of Las Vegas, Nev., Renee Tellaria of Redlands, and Thomas Baker of Hesperia. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, one of whom was recently born, just two days after his death, and is his namesake, Allison Royale Baker. Memorial services are to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glen Haven Memorial Park, 13017 N. Lopez Canyon Road in San Fernando. Donations may be made to the Roy Baker Memorial Fund at Desert Community Bank.
